We welcomed Grandma and Papou last weekend. Uncle Joe and Aunt Abby came, too. They made the trip south for Henry's birthday. We had fun playing at Catch Air (this time with Colin and Will too), eating at Chipotle, and going to the park.
Family and friends brought the birthday boy plenty of birthday gifts: a book and train drawbridge from Colin, a Thomas sticker book from Uncle Chris, Aunt Stacie, and George, a Thomas bubble gun from Uncle Joe and Aunt Abby, a firetruck and fireman outfit from Nanna and Pa, and a bouncy horse from Grandma and Papou. Each one brought a smile to his face.
On the evening of his actual birthday, we enjoyed a nice, quiet family dinner at home. For dessert, Henry requested a leftover birthday cupcake and a piece of "coal" candy. And then another. He has already figured out that you can have as many sweets as you'd like on your birthday. Smart boy.
Likes: Creating stories with my trains, doing "funny things" with Daddy, hanging out with my best friend, Colin, reading books (my favorites are books about trains, tractors, or anything by Shel Silverstein), making John laugh, going to the park or the bookstore on the weekends, making up names for kids that I play with at the gym playcenter (my favorite made up names are Cheston and Nesdin), eating lentils, couscous, PB sandwiches, lemons, pancakes, fish, broccoli, fried chicken, Chipotle, yogurt, blue suckers, and colby jack cheese, sucking two fingers and twirling the strings on my blanket while I go to sleep, getting in John's crib in the morning to roll around and be silly with him, asking Mama or Daddy to pick me up by saying, "Hold you, Mama," taking a 2 to 3 hour nap each day, spelling words in the bathtub (I can read just about any 3 letter word that starts with a consonant), swimming with Ms. Vicki, and being a kind friend to others (this one makes Mama very proud).
Dislikes: Timeouts (I never said I was perfect), bees, sharing my trains with John, eating meat, sticking bandaids on my boo-boos (I love bandaids, just not on me), getting dirty, and saying goodbye to visitors (I'm always very, very sad),
Growth: I weigh 36 lbs., and I am 40 and 1/4 inches tall. This puts me in the 85th percentile for weight and 95th percentile for height. I put on 5 lbs. in the past year and grew 3 and 1/2 inches!
We celebrated Henry's 3rd birthday with a train party in our back yard. We invited a handful of his friends from our church playgroup. There were trains to play with, tracks to run on, treats to eat, and train whistles to blow. I am certain the parents loved me for those last two. And the cherry on top was sending each kid home with "coal" (oreo rice krispie treats). I am guessing Henry wasn't the only one who missed his nap that day.
The boys had fun playing with their friends and their uncles. Henry and Colin were, as usual, attached at the hip the entire party. After helping themselves to snacks and speaking gibberish non-stop to each other, they pretended to take naps in the playroom chairs. Silly boys.
Henry told anyone who would listen that he was having a train party with a train cake. And he requested "his favorite": chocolate cake with blue icing. Mama had to deliver. I stayed up way too late making it, but seeing his face light up when he saw it made the sleeplessness worth it. And after he ate it, he was sure to give me three, blue icing covered, kisses to say thank you (three kisses is a bedtime ritual). And John, our cute little caboose, got some kisses of his own from Cousin George and Uncle Chris.
Later that afternoon, Henry opened some gifts: books from John, games from Grandma and Papou, a piano from Ella and Mila, passes to the Children's Museum from Great Aunt Mary and Uncle Bobby, and Cranky the Crane from Great Aunt Cathy and Uncle Joe. Then we brought Henry outside for a gift from us: a Thomas the Train power wheels! Seeing him smile as he rode that little train around our driveway was the perfect ending to a great party.
